Volunteer Writers Needed

writers-needed

Your PVMAC newsletter, Flightine, is still in need of an editor.  Tom Marcure, who is on the PVMAC board has been filling in as Editor-in-chief and Tom Callahan has been doing the writing for the last few months.  The two Toms and The board realizes that this is a-lot of work for one person to put the newsletter together and come up with interesting content every month.  In fact it is a-lot of work for two people to do.  Especially when we each have demanding jobs, demanding families and we like to fly occasionally too.

CloseAirSupportEveryone in our club wants a newsletter every month that is interesting , informative,  educational,  and occasionally on-time.  We also don't want to put the entire burden on one or two people, as this will most  lead to quick burn-out and is certainly not conducive to meeting the desired goals of our newsletter.  To that end, the board has agreed to "CALL IN AIR SUPPORT!" so to speak.   We are asking for volunteers to help out by  contributing an article to the newsletter.   And for your efforts you will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of five $100 cash prizes at our December club meeting.  For each article you contribute, you will receive one ticket into the drawing.  And although you are welcome and encouraged to contribute more than one article per month, you will only receive one ticket per month.

Articles can be about anything RC airplane , helicopter, or multi-rotor related and here are just a few ideas that may spark your writing creativity.   You can do a write up and review of an ARF you bought and flew, a new scratch build your working on, or new piece of equipment (charger, radio etc.) you acquired are now using. Perhaps you can share some wisdom on a particular skill or technique with a great step by step how-to guide.  If you’re an active competitor in one of the many flying competitions, perhaps you can share with us how to get started, or what the competition entails or how to be competitive in the sport.   Maybe you know someone in the RC industry and would like to interview them.   Or you may do a write up and review of an RC event that you attended.  The story of your plane crash can certainly result in a good article, especially if you include the sequence of events leading up to the incident, the investigation, lessons learned and preventative measure.  And winning the raffle at the end of the year can certainly help take some of the edge off your P.T.C.D. (Post Tremendous Crash Depression).   These are just a few Ideas that would make our Flightline newsletter interesting, informative and  educational and a newsletter that everyone looks forward to receiving each month.

For those of you who regularly attend the monthly club meetings , you know that participants of the show-and-tell each month get entered into a raffle for a chance to win either a  $250 or $350 Visa gift card at the end of the year.   If you participate in that drawing, You may consider also doing a write-up of the same subject for this drawing.  This will give you yet another opportunity to win in the separate newsletter drawing.

The article submission drawing rules are as follows:

  1. For each month that you submit one or more articles, you will be entered in the year end drawing.
  2. You can only receive one entry per month.
  3. Valid articles that are submitted, but not used in the newsletter will still receive one entry for the month in which they were submitted.
  4. Articles may not always be used in the month for which they were received.
  5. In order to qualify for an entry, your article must be approved for publication by the editor. If your article is not accepted, you will be notified why it was not accepted. Articles will generally only be rejected due to content not in line with the spirit of the modeling hobby.
  6. All decisions concerning article acceptance are final.
  7. Five entries will be drawn at the December General Membership Meeting. Each winner will receive $100. You can only win one prize per year. If we have less than five entries for any drawing, the ad- ditional prizes will not be awarded.

If you would like to submit an article for the newsletter,  You can email them to  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., and both Toms will receive it and review it for the upcoming publication.   It is best to send a Microsoft Word document that has all of your photos included and formatted how you would like to see them.  However if you don’t have access to a word processing program that can produce these document, you can just send the email in text format and attach the photos and we will do our best to make it look good.  If you would like to have your article submitted for the upcoming newsletter,  it should be received by the end of the month or it will probably go into the following months Newsletter.     Articles should have a title, should be at least a couple of paragraphs long, and 1 or 2 photos are encouraged but not required.

New P-51D ARF from VQ Models: Lady Alice!

VQ Models LadyAlice P-51dWe do not normally promote or advertise specific products here on the PVMAC website, but today I thought we shoud make an exception given this particular bit of exciting news. VQ RC Models  has released a new P-51D Mustang that many at the PVMAC are all to familiar with “Lady Alice”. It is a 46 sized ARF with a 62" wingspand and designed for glow or electric setups with the built in magnetic battery hatch.

I reached out to Mike Greenshields who is the Vice President of Product Development and Marketing at  Hobby People, which is the US Importer for VQ Arfs, to find out more about this VQ Arf.   Mike says that he had the idea that lady alice would make a great model, and since he knew Dr. Ken Wagner the owner of Lady Alice, He asked him if it would be ok to poduce a model of his P-51D.  When Ken agreed to the idea, Vinh Quang who is the owner of VQ Models was prompted to build the aircraft.   Mike reports that it is an updated version of VQ’s older P-51 line, which now includes a magnetic hatch for an electric friendly setup, now has full flaps, and a tail wheel that is “in the right spot”.    He tells me they will also be stocking retracts and struts for it too which will be sold separately.  Finally,  Mike says that though Ken Wagner has not seen the aircraft yet, they are in the process of building him one, and plan to take pictures with Ken, his new model, and his full size P-51D.

LadyAliceLady Alice began its life as a P-51D built and intended for combat.  Built in 1945 towards of the end of the war, this Mustang was never sent into combat.  It stayed in the USAF until about 1950 and served as a fighter trainer.  It was then sold to the Royal Canadian Air Force who flew it until 1956 at which point it was declare surplus.  In 1963, Bill Lacy out of Honolulu acquired the aircraft and flew it frequently until around 1972, when someone accidentally taxied into it and damaged it.  It was put in a container for year until it was transferred to Art Teeters, in Salinas California.  Today Art Teeters is a world-renowned P-51 restorer, but back then this was his first P-51, and he totally restored the aircraft over the course of about 2 years.  It is reported that Bill flew it infrequently until it was acquired by Bob Jepson in 1999 and repainted as Lady Alice in 2000.  In 2006, it was sold again to a local R/C modeler, Member and supporter of the PVMAC, Dr. Ken “WAGS” Wagner, who now owns and operates Lady Alice out of Chino CA.  Regularly flown, this P-51D flies at numerous events and is exhibited all over Southern California and even makes its way to Oshkosh most years.

Here is some more information about the P-51, and like most of you, I look forward to seeing these fly at our field.  You can order the aircraft here at Hobby People.

February 2015 Club Meeting Recap

FEBMTG15 02As you know, we have our monthly PVMAC club meetings which are held on the second Tuesday of every month at the Chino Community Building at 7pm. We usually only get about 10% attendance, which is not great for a club of this size.  It would be great if we had greater attance by our members to show their support for the club and what their elected board is doing to keep our club beautifly maintained, safe and open for flying.   We realize that its not feasible for some to attend, so we will try to recap the discussions and post them here on the website on a monthly basis.

I apologize in advance if I got your name wrong or mispelled.

Tribute to the Goodwine Family

Dear Tom,
Your Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to pay special tribute to a PVMAC family that is responsible for your club being what it is today. We are of course talking about the Goodwine Family.
Phil Goodwine, our past president and chairman deserves the highest recognition for his work, effort and financial contribution to the PVMAC. Phil ran the club like a true professional and our past events under Phil’s leadership are a testament to his dedication and effort. His drive to make the PVMAC the best club in Southern California and possibly the country is well known and very much appreciated. Most members don’t realize the time and effort it takes to run a club of our size. As President and Chairman, Phil held down two full time jobs – his business, Goodwine Glass and the PVMAC. Over the past six years, Phil spent many hours on field maintenance, upgrading our flying sites and making our events the fantastic events they were. There were also countless times that Phil made trips to Prado to take care of one problem or another. Finally, Phil always volunteered his time and effort to hang airplanes for the AMA Expos. This saved the club $125 every year for the cost of our booth. You can be sure that the cost to do this was more than the $125 it saved the club, but for Phil that was just his way of giving back to the hobby that he and Kyle enjoy. All in all Phil’s effort on behalf of the PVMAC was a twenty-four hour job for which he put forth 100% effort all six years of his tenure.
Next we would like to thank Beth Goodwine. Beth spent much of the last six years filling the positions of Secretary and Membership Director. Both of these tasks were a big demand on her time and effort. There is much more to both these jobs than most of us realize and Beth performed both of these jobs to the fullest extent possible. What most members do not know is the countless hours of time and effort Beth put into running the snack bar. Purchasing the food, cooking and serving the food, and taking the entire dirty dish collection home after an event to wash them. Phil usually ran our events, but the snack bar was always all Beth. Yes Beth would usually have volunteers helping her at events, but that really is a small portion of the responsibility of running the snack bar. Most of us never saw the other 80% of the effort it takes to maintain and run the snack bar. Beth always did it without complaint and she did a tremendous job.
Finally there is Kyle. Anytime something needed to be done at the field, Kyle was always there with Phil making it happen. Kyle ran the raffle at the club meetings and was always involved in the club. How many of us in the club benefited from Kyle’s knowledge and help with their airplane. How many of us relied on Kyle to maiden our airplanes and trim them for us. The simple answer is many members. There is a good reason that Kyle was chosen to be a Horizon Hobby Team Pilot. It is the time and effort he puts forth to help others in this hobby. Kyle should be an example to us all as to what a club member should be.
We have tried to put into words what the participation of the Goodwine family has meant to the PVMAC. However no words are really adequate to express our appreciation for everything the Goodwines did to make the PVMAC what it is today and the envy of other model airplane clubs.
Thank you Phil, Beth and Kyle for all your effort and support.
Respectfully,
The Pomona Valley Model Airplane Club Board of Directors.
