UPDATE ON JOHN SKOLNICK

According to John's wife, John is going to be buried in San Diego next to his father.

Also, the cause of death was due to his exposure to Agent Orange for which he had been receiving treatment from the VA.

11/7/2008

With a sad heart I bring you the following news. John Skolnick, a fellow club member has passed away from a heart attack.

As I understand, John had a headache Wednesday afternoon, he was taken to San Antonio Hospital where he suffered an Heart Attack and passed away at approximately at 9PM.

I met John several years ago.  He had recently retired from being a Correctional Officer and was flying a plane that his Dad had given him.

Later on in life John contracted cancer of the lungs, but it was the heart attack that took him away.

That's all the details I have, as I get more I'll try keep you informed, if anybody has more information, please pass it to me, I'll let everyone else know.

Thank You
Dave

We are sorry to say we have lost one of our own.

PVMAC Member Pat Costley passed away at Riverside Community Hospital on October 10th of a heart attack he had suffered earlier.  We will all miss his smile and humor. Pat has always been there to help other fliers with spare parts or a positive comment.

Our deepest sympathy and support go out to his family. We have all been blessed to have known Pat and he will be missed by all of us.

Arrangements are pending and Dave will pass on information regarding the services for Pat as he gets it.

Prado Field Maintenance

We need a work party at the field to help clean up the dead weeds after the spraying 3 weeks ago.

The club has hired a company and rented some equipment to remove the dead weeds.  We need some volunteers to assist in the clean up, moving barrels and trimming some trees.

The work is scheduled for Thursday 9-18-08 at 8am.  If you can assist in this clean up please contact Richard Smith at 714-337-2136.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do I simply sum up the weekend fun fly at Norton,

“WHAT A BLAST”

Kyle and I arrived Sunday morning 6:30 a.m. and started getting his planes together. All that was going through my mind was, man I hope this heat doesn’t keep people away and we have a good time and turn out. It wasn’t long before that thought was the understatement of the morning.

It was great to see absolutely no empty parking spaces from the west end of the concrete to the east end of the dirt. In some places they were parked two cars or more deep.

Marty what can I say “THANKS”!  You got there early set up your sound system and by 8:00 a.m. had the music going and didn’t stop till about 4:00 p.m. EVERYBODY enjoyed your tunes.  Now we expect you every weekend.

To everyone that brought out food, drinks, ice, cakes, watermelon, etc. THANK YOU. We could not have done it without your help. My guess is we had somewhere between 60 – 70 people at the field, WOW.

THANKS to Beth, Kelsey, Patricia, Troy & Danny for helping with the cooking and getting all the food and drinks ready to go.  They cooked up 70 hamburgers and hot dogs, and all was gone.

THANKS to Grandpa Dave for putting the bug in everybody's ear, sending out the invites and emails and for getting this Fun Fly started and for all your help to me, THANK YOU.

To everybody that happened to be at the field when Kyle and I showed up for clean-up detail, THANK YOU, it makes it so much better with your help. This makes it your field.

THANKS to all of the pilots, family and friends that came on out to have not just a good time, but a GREAT TIME at this Fun Fly and to support the PVMAC and this wonderful hobby. It was great watching my son Kyle fly. He’s come a long while since he was on the buddy box 60 weeks ago with Grandpa Dave.

It was great seeing Grandpa Dave, Danny, George, Mike, Doug, Paul, Phil, Oscar and everybody else that flew having a good time and sharing the airspace and even handing off transmitters to each other. THANKS for just having fun, leaving the politics and attitudes at the gate.

Last but not least for those of you who could not make it or decided not to come on out, I’m sorry YOU missed out, for those that were there correct me if I’m wrong but I do believe you all had a great time and good food. Let us know when you want to do it again. The day finally had to come to an end with Grandpa Dave, Kyle and I sitting on the back of his van at 6:30 p.m. wondering why everybody left and if anybody else was coming by.

It was a “BLAST”

Thanks Phil

Be Safe… Carry the Essentials

This serves as a reminder that everyone using our fields should carry a fire extinguisher and First Aid kit in their own vehicle or trailer.

Anything can happen at the field, and usually does when you’re unprepared.

Some arriving fliers at the Norton have found the field cable unsecured.

 A word to the wise;

Please play attention where you put your hands, or where you sit. There have been numerous black widow spiders seen at and in the Norton pit box and the Little Boys Room. so please be careful

I would also say they're at Prado as well

Here is a great big THANK YOU from the Norton flyers to Phil Vaughn for building four great airplane stands (photo attached).

He had the plans and volunteered to build two stands if the club paid for the materials.  The club board gave the OK so we went to Lowe's to get the stuff.

Phil even provided his trailer to pick up the lumber and take it to his house and then delivered the completed stands to the field.  He added wheels to the front legs to make them easy to move.

The first two were such a hit that we persuaded him to make two more.  Total cost was about $65 each.

Thanks again to Phil for a real enhancement  to our safety and convenience!

5/13/08

Felix "Phil" Gallegos was honored with the first ever PVMAC Honorary Gold Lifetime Membership at the General Meeting on 5/13/08.

Phil is 84 years young and started flying "free flight planes" at the tender young age of 8.  He went into the Army in 1943 at the age of 18.

After basic training, he was sent to the Pacific Theater, where he carried the "flame thrower" because he was small enough to get into the caves. The Army gave Phil a Bronze Star for his efforts.

Phil left the Army after World War II and soon thereafter joined the USAF, where he became a demolition expert. He traveled over much of the US, including Alaska, where he was promoted to First Sergeant of the Rescue Squadron.

After retiring from the USAF, he began building RC planes for his friends and hobby shops in the local area. His planes were always signed with "Philbilt".

Phil has been a PVMAC member almost from it's inception. He no longer flies RC planes, but you will still find him at the field every day.
